How to Write

Writing in Thalas'sian is accomplished in two ways: a phonetic script (called dimana'shiun) and a hieroglyphic script (called mae'shiun). First we will cover the Dimana'shiun, which is much, much easier to learn. It's considered an uneducated person's script, or a child's script. Educated Thalas'sian writing is done with a combination of both the scripts - like Japanese.

Fiona ended up making the writing system this way because of the in-game "runestone" glyph.

The Dimana'shiun

The letters have two different appearances: the way they look when carved, and the way they look when written with a pen or brush.

When writing the words phonetically, spell them according to the Quel'sian dialect, no matter how much the sound of the words has changed in the Sin'sian dialect.

The Dimana'shiun were made from common pieces or shapes in the Mae'shiun from words with those sounds in them.

How to Use Dimana'shiun

The arrangement of the symbols is similar to Korean, grouped by syllable. The sounds in a syllable are written from left to right. The next syllable goes underneath it. One vowel per a syllable, except for long vowels (AA, EE, II, OO, UU).  That means, "Thalas'sian" would be written like this:

There's no spaces between words.

Punctuation marks go before and after their phrases, except for commas, because the Pause mark doesn't affect the intonation of the overall phrase.  Also, punctuation marks aren't based on the grammatical content, but rather on how the phrase should be read.

Here's how a sentence would be written. This one means "Who are you?!"

How to Use Dimana'shiun with Mae'shiun

The Mae'shiun are used for words that have meaning - nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and pronouns. Words and affixes that have a purely grammatical function are written with Dimana'shiun.

Here's what "I will be speaking Thalas'sian." looks like:

Final Notes

The word "to be - al" is always written with Dimana'shiun.

For the adjectives that are made from the suffix 'el, the suffix is written phonetically.

When you have more than one line of text, don't try to keep the word together. It's alright to start the next line in the middle of a word. The next line will be to the right.
